Collaborate with Chih Summary

(Same message posted to course announcement & discussion area)

It was great to see several of your joining us on Collaborate today. As usual, here is the summary for what's been discussed to share with you. I hope you find them useful.

Q: Should I respond to the comments /feedback you made on my Google Docs assignment or click "Resolve" on each comment/feedback?

A: It is up to you.  You are welcome to do so.  In fact, several classmates took the advantages of the commenting/discussion feature on Google Docs to exchange their ideas with me.  It is a great feature for interactive and collaborative communication.

Q: Could you explain more on lesson discussion posting periods?

A:

1st posting period (M-Th):

·      Respond to all key discussion questions.  Generally, they are four of them.

·      After responding to all key questions, if you prefer, you can respond to others' posting.

2nd posting period (F-Su)

·      2 or more postings; Respond to others' postings (the ones you did in 1st can't be counted toward the 2nd posting period.)

·      Respond to the questions raised to your postings. Frequently, the classmates, the moderators, and the instructor may ask you questions.

·      In addition, you can respond to the "Follow-up" questions. Sometime based on our discussion development, I may post "Follow-up" questions for us to ponder the question more thorough.

·      The purpose in the 2nd posting period is for us to deepen our understanding and knowledge in each discussion topic.

·      Be sure you have total 6 postings in each lesson at least.  Based on previous students' experiences, the average is 12-14 postings for each lesson. Remember the quantity is just the minimum.  The quality is what we want.

Q: I would like to take ETC655 in the 2nd session but it is full.

A: Please let me know ASAP and I would be happy to override you since it is a good arrangement to take ETC645 and ETC655 in the same semester.

Q: I enjoy Collaborate to chat with you and other classmates in real time. Will you do this again?

A: Yes, we will do it as often as possible. In fact, I have an idea that we could use Collaborate for some online learning topics.  Like what we did tonight, the students and I were discussion how we can integrate "online discussion" to enhance learner-learner interaction, to make it more engaging, and to deepen our understanding and knowledge etc.  It is not a lecture. It is more like we share and inspire each other on certain topics.  Please watch our announcement for the upcoming events and the topics. We will address your questions first then move to the online learning topics.  I hope we will have more classmates to join us.

Q: What does it mean that we should using learning theory to support our arguments?

A: Learning theory is referred to behaviorism, constructivism, or Connectivism.  Some of them may branch out with or are related to Cognitivism.

If we are not familiar with learning theory, it would be necessary for us to conduct a research to know them.  So when we justify our argument, we can use relevant learning theories to support our arguments. Rather than just we say so.  As educators, it is very important for us to have clear understanding on different learning theories.

This is a good concept map for learning theories to share with you: http://cmapspublic3.ihmc.us/rid=1LGVGJY66-CCD5CZ-12G3/Learning%20Theory.cmap?utm_content=bufferda27e&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer

Connectivism is the newest one.  We will cover it in ETC655.

Q: How should I approach #11 (Technology infrastructure) in Assignment 2?

A: #11 is a tough one to address since many of us don't have knowledge in the back end system planning.

We can obtain the information from the reviewed system website or we can contact IT staff from the institution or school that we intend to review the system for.

Research the reviewed system's website sometime could provide us with the needed information.  Contacting the IT staff or Technology specialists from the institutions or schools could help us to understand school IT policy in installing and managing a new learning system.

Review the IT policy could help as well.  Frequently, IT policy may not be easy to obtain.  Talking to IF staff is the best.  Previous students found both resources (website, and interview) are the most useful approaches.  Read more.

Q: May I ask you non-course related questions?

A: Yes, I would be happy to answer any ETC related questions.
